Volkswagen California

It’s been years since I set foot in a VW camper and I never thought the iconic little van would be anything other than a nice piece of vintage.  But the powers that be at Volkswagen have updated it for 2010 whilst insisting they are also keeping the spirit of the classic.  And very attractive they’ve made it sound too.  There’s a sizeable double bed and an electrically operated secondary heater, sink and twin burner gas hob.  The one thing it lacks is the toilet but then given its fairly compact size, unless you’re looking at something the size of a bedpan, where would you put it.  The little van comfortably sleeps four with the roof raising up to provide accommodation for the second two and is on sale for £39,965.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Mercedes Benz is pulling out all the stops for the London car show with its SLS AMG expected to be one of the main attractions. Around 400,000 visitors are expected to attend the show to see the latest vehicles from a number of manufacturers, with the SLS AMG “sure to get pulses racing.”  The manufacturer says the car is instantly recognisable by its rough its gullwing doors, with the curved design also extending to the mirrors, taillights and 3-spoke steering wheel. The 2010 Canary Wharf London Motorexpo. is running from June 7th until June 13th and offers members of the public a glimpse of a number of top models.

Land Rover Mobile

I discovered this week that far from limiting itself to auto technology, the Land Rover brand has been expanding all over the shop so that now it can boast its very own mobile phone, as rough and tough as the cars. Land Rover teamed up with Sonim Technologies, to launch the Land Rover S1 by Sonim, “a rugged, high quality mobile phone designed to meet the needs of those who work and play in the great outdoors.”  The mobile phone was unveiled in September of last year by the world’s greatest explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, fresh from his successful ascent of Mount Everest.  How apt.

BMW Car Sales Increase

Whilst BMW might seem like a brand that would surely suffer badly during a recession (which of course it has alongside all other carmakers), it would appear that things are now looking up.  Back in March the company reported sales of 24,395 vehicles, an increase of 14 per cent from the 21,630 vehicles sold in the same month of 2009. For the first quarter, the BMW Group also reported a total sales volume of 35,864 vehicles, up 17 per cent compared to 30,618 vehicles sold in the first three months of last year.  The company has already received over 3,300 advance orders of which nearly half are for the new 520d which goes on sales in June.
